Car Washes and Career Choices

"A graduation ceremony is an event where the commencement speaker tells thousands of students dressed in identical caps and gowns that 'individuality' is the key to success."- Robert Purvis. Its almost that time of the year....Grad 2010. This past weekend Dave and I caught up with some grad students at the KISS FM/Foam Shine Dry Grad Car Wash Challenge to talk to them about grad and their future.
CAR WASHES AND CAREER CHOICES - You have a car to wash...now how are you going to put gas in it:
On Sunday, we recorded another Paint The Town Greene with some members from VSS Grad Class 2010. And after talking with them, I couldn't help think about my own grad year and the thoughts that went thru my head back then. Honestly, despite knowing what I wanted to do with my life...post graduation scared the heck out of me. Would I get accepted to the college of my choice, would I be able to feed myself, will there be a job for me when I get out of college and about ten thousand other questions caused me much anxiety. Despite the future being very exciting, it CAN be a bit scary! But I will only pass on two pieces of advice that my parents gave me...and it really impacted my future. Number one, have a plan! Please have a plan! The one thing I can't stand and either could my dad was the idea of throwing money out the window. If you are going to attend and expensive university or buy tools for an apprenticeship know what you are getting into! 25 to 50 thousand dollars for a four year degree and you're not even sure if its applicable to your career choice? Are you insane? Don't waste your money! Actually more importantly... don't waste your parents cash if you have no clue what you want to be when you get out. Number two, choose something you enjoy doing. My dad would always say that, as long as you enjoy doing it, getting up and going to work for the next 45 years will be a lot easier. SO I took their advice, I paid my student loan off in half the time (I got a job from my education), and I am now into my 20th year of work and still love it. Mom and Dad were bang on with that advice. So Grad class of 2010...my advice is the same...have a plan, and plan on enjoying your work. A big thank you to all the grads who took part in Paint The Town Greene, they seem like they're ready to take on the world...so good luck and godspeed.
