Empty Bowls & The BCHL
Written by Rob Abramenko Friday, 26 February 2010 00:00
'When it comes to empty bowl fundraisers, this is the superbowl of all bowl events' - Rob Abramenko. Sorry for the self indulgence but admit it...thats a pretty good quote. Today is FUN FRIDAY!! Todays blog is all about the empty bowl fundraiser and the BCHL playoffs which kick off this weekend. With all of this Olympic hockey action...all jacked up for some playoff hockey!
EMPTY BOWLS & THE BCHL - Please Sir, can I have some more?:
First off need to talk about the Vernon Community Arts Centre's big fundraiser that is coming up this St. Patrick's Day of course on March 17th. A few weeks ago, Lori and I were invited to 'toss' a clay bowl that will be sold to help raise money for the centre. Lori was brave enough to get her hands dirty and did an admirable job working that spinny thing. I hid behind the video camera to catch all the laugh out loud action. If you missed it...check out the video right here ---------->
Anyways, the bowl came out not to shabby...Lori might have a new hobby on the horizon. But if you have a$20.00 get down to the event and purchase the bowl and help out the arts community. Also check out Rob's 'Picture Of The Day' for a sneak peek of Lori's bowl. And for more information about the event, check out the VCAC's website HERE.
PROGNOSTICATING THE PLAYOFFS - Or here, just take my cash now!:
I am not a betting man, that is because I am terrible at predicting outcomes. The only thing I know is the teams I cheer for usually lose (Canucks, Seahawks, Jays). The only team that I have ever cheered for that has won anything are the Vernon Vipers. Therefore, I never bet against the home team and I never predict how they will do in the post season. I just don't want to ever jinx a good thing. But I have no problems making predictions for the rest of the BCHL, so here are my first round picks for the Interior Conference. Penticton over Merritt in 5. Westside over Trail in 6 and Salmon Arm over Quesnel in 6 as well. No upsets in the first round. The Vernon Vipers meanwhile will have another week before they see any action. Their first game will go March 9th. Join KISS FM on-location for the Boston Pizza Tailgate Party. Fans can get a slice of 'za for a donation, that money will go towards our Wayne Buck Memorial Bursary for a Vernon Viper. Bucky, Vernon's longtime P.A. announcer passed away earlier this year. Oh and to get you into the playoff mood...we had some fun putting together this fun little BCHL Playoff Promo video. The video was from the last Vipers-Vees game at the Wesbild Centre. Tell me you wouldn't want to see these two teams battle it out for the Interior Title. Honestly its too bad that the 2nd and 3rd CJHL teams couldn't play for the league championship. If they do meet...its going to be in a word AWESOME!
THE VIPERS GET SHUT-OUT - From the big Awards:
The BCHL announced its award winners earlier this week and there were a few surprises. Despite Blake Voth winning Goalie Of The Year and Voth and Graeme Gordon winning Best Tandem, Vernon was somewhat overlooked. Talking to Assistant coach Jason Williamson, he suggested it might be one of the hazards of having a lot of depth on the team and certain players not having the big numbers. However, I suggest that Vipers D-man Steve Weinstein should of at least been considered for Most Sportsmanlike. I mean, 60 games on the blueline and not a penalty minute...and you don't even get mentioned? Blake Voth who had a record setting year between the pipes could of been recognized for Rookie Of The Year, and News Director Pete McIntyre pondered why Dan Nycholat wasn't mentioned for Top Defenceman. Oh well, its not like the Vipers almost had a record setting season...OH WAIT...THEY DID! I guess Vernon will have to concentrate on winning the big team awards like the Fred Page Cup, Doyle Cup and the RBC. Anyways had a great chat with Jason Williamson aka Willy. ODDS & ENDS - Time to win some tix:
As I mentioned, I never make predictions about the Vernon Vipers, but I would like to hear who you think the Vipers will play in the next round and who will win the series. If you feel really brave take a shot at prediction how long the series will go as well. I will be giving away 2 pair of tickets to each of the first two home games. Also don't forget if you want a chance to win from Rob's Blog during other times...just drop me a line and tell me you want to be added to my mail-out list. Good luck.
