We would like to recognize Laura Hockman, Executive Director of Vernon's Disability Resource Centre as 'Lori and Rob's Hero of the Week.'

Despite the fact that the Centre needs to fundraise for their own purposes, Laura jumped on board with the Village Green Mall at the Vernon Vipers' Game on Friday, January 22, to sell 50/50 tickets to raise money for the Canadian Paralympic Committee and the athletes, which is so much a part of what Independent Living stands for.

Laura Hockman and her volunteers did an amazing job and were able to raise $1000 for Paralympics.

Congratulations and thanks for making our community a better place to live.

Trash T.V. Treats

trashtvtnTelevision is an invention that permits you to be entertained in your living room by people you wouldn't have in your home. ~ David Frost. I don't think when David Frost made this comment, he had any idea about reality television. These are shows you don't admit to watching...guilty pleasures if you will.  But love them or hate them...you will probably watch one or two of them.  And quite honestly sometimes watching garbage t.v. is much better then the alternative that I and many others grew up with...repeats of the Beachcombers. So...here are five shows you might want to check out during your summer holidays.

Parenting Tips for Back-to-School

tn_education0691.gif - 5.84 Kb  Don't be a stranger -- Talk to your child's teacher early and often, keep in touch with how things are going

Learning doesn't end after school is out for the day -- ask to see your child's most recent project

Stay involved as much as you can -- even if it's just for moral support

Help keep your child organized -- organize thos test or permission slips you've signed, write things down on the family calendar etc.

Let your kids make mistakes -- it's the best way to learn how to best solve their problems

Raise a good reader -- read aloud together, taking runs reading a story

If the teacher deserves a good grade, give her one -- let them know that they're doing a good job

The teacher is on your side -- give her the benefit of the doubt -- there's always two sides to a story, no child is perfect

There is a secret to better grades -- encourage your child to meet with their teacher to resolve a problem
