Convicted Cop Could Be Disciplined

A Vernon Mountie has been fined and lost his licence for a year in connection to a drunk-driving case.
However, that may not be all the penalties Constable Jody Turpin faces.
Turpin was arrested last December by officers who saw a man sitting behind the wheel of a parked vehicle.
The officers thought the man was about to drive his personal vehicle and recommended charges.
Turpin pleaded guilty Thursday to failing to provide a breath sample and was fined $1,000, and ordered not to drive for a year.
RCMP 'E' division spokesman Sgt. Rob Vermeulen says Turpin's conviction is being taken very seriously.
"Obviously it's disappointing when a member is charged with anything criminal, but I think it highlights that the laws are applicable to everyone. He was charged criminally like anyone else in the same circumstances, and unlike the public, he's going to have to face any internal discipline that may arise."
Vermeulen says an internal probe will determine the discipline Turpin will receive, which could include dismissal from the force.
"If it's formal discipline, that means a disciplinary hearing before an adjudication board, and the consequences at their disposal is anything from a written reprimand, to loss of pay or rank, up to and including dismissal."
Vermeulen says in the meantime, the officer is still posted to administrative duties at the Vernon detachment.
"That will continue for some time but at some point a decision will be made by managers there about returning him to operational duties, keeping in mind the driving suspension."
