The District of Lake Country is hoping the provincial government will come through with funds to create a sort of Health Hub for the community.
Mayor James Baker says that would take the pressure off doctors dealing with such issues as mental health and chronic illnesses such as diabetes.
“There’s practitioners or health care people that are not the high priced physician but would provide an area where people wouldn’t have to go to Vernon or Kelowna to get the expertise.”
Baker says the community’s health planning society has been able to attract some doctors but they need a better place to work out of.
A Health Hub is a relatively new concept.
Baker says the District tried to convince the previous government to set up a pilot project but it was felt Fort St John had a greater need.
“And so the pilot went there so we’re getting the new government to have a look at how the pilot project is doing and is it something we could get happening here.”
He says there is also some federal money that could be available for this type of unit.
