Last weekend I received a text from a co-worker “Have you seen this swan-duck?” with a photo attached. I had not seen this duck before, but it was definitely not a swan.
My colleague said he knew it wasn’t a swan-duck, but that it was odd to see wandering around Polson Park. (I think he was just embarrassed that he thought it was some sort of duck-swan hybrid)
The more I thought about it, the more I realized I had never seen a completely white duck…outside of the IPE. So I looked it up and found out that this is probably the American Pekin, a domestic duck reared principally for meat.
But the question is, what is it doing in Polson Park? Our staff has been quite fascinated by this bird since last weekend, so I’m wondering if anyone else has encountered her (I’m pretty sure it’s a female because I’ve been reading up on duck characteristics and now I’m basically an expert).
On a side note, should we name her? She could become Vernon’s unofficial mascot, leave a comment below!
