Man, that’s a lot of sugar.
New York City’s Times Square endured one sweet mess yesterday morning – as in, a 45,485 pound mass of sugar packages. But it wasn’t malicious…in fact, it was rather ‘kind’ – as in the food company KIND, and their attempt to dramatically show just how much added sugar kids in the U.S. consume every five minutes.
Yep, not every year. Not every day. Not even every HOUR.
…every five minutes. Scary.
Stephanie Perruzza, a Health and Wellness Specialist at KIND, explains, “on average, children are eating three times more than the recommended limit of added sugar each day.” And while added sugar is not the only cause of the global obesity epidemic, it sure isn’t helping.
SO…where does all that added sugar come from? Much of the added sugar in kids’ diets is in processed food, hiding in places such as..
- Dairy substitutes
- Granola and nutrition bars
- Dried Fruit
