Masao Gunji has been collecting this memorabilia for over 30 years. Personally, I’ve never really understood the appeal of Hello Kitty, but Gunji says the character’s expression is what he gravitates toward. When he is feeling sad, she appears sad; when he is feeling happy, she appears happy. He also says Hello Kitty has “always cheered him up,” and it certainly seems that way, given he has spent over a quarter-million and collected 5169 items over three and a half decades.
I remember the sports card collecting craze of the late 80s and early 90s – I was swept up like crumbs off the kitchen floor when the dog gets loose. Because everyone and their uncle was collecting at that time, all the cards I have are mostly worthless… Even the Michael Jordan baseball card – I have three or four, including one in mint condition – Worth upwards of $5.
At this point in my life though, I’m mostly just collecting gray hairs and wrinkles.
