Now THIS is cool.
Jimmy Fallon was recently chatting with his ‘Tonight Show’ audience during a commercial break when one man caught his attention….and man, what unfolded next? Jimmy couldn’t quite believe it, and neither could those in attendance.
“My grandfather has been on The Tonight Show three times as a guest,” the man said. “He’s the longest-living television actor in the world. He started in 1948 and he’s still on ‘Days Of Our Lives’ today.”
The individual is Bill Hayes…a 92-year old actor, who (at Fallon’s request) made his way down to the ‘Tonight Show’ stage, which he first graced as a guest of Jack Paar and Johnny Carson. And as Hayes slowly rolled off his long, long list of Hollywood accomplishments (“Wait, you sang ‘Davy Crockett’?!” a stunned Fallon exclaimed), it was tough to determine which facet was more wonderful to watch; a legend receiving a well deserved moment in the spotlight, or poor Fallon, who obviously had no idea such an accomplished talent was sitting in the crowd the entire time.
Fun fact; seated right next to Hayes is his wife, Susan Seaforth Hayes. Both are longtime actors on ‘Days of our Lives’, where they play Doug and Julie. Their real and on-screen relationships were so popular that they are the first and only soap opera stars to ever grace the cover of ‘Time’ magazine – guess Bill didn’t have time to get to THAT tidbit in his impressive arsenal.
