There’s an old adage in any kind of sport involving a ball – if you’re a good player, the ball will find you. For Stephen Piscotty of the St. Louis Cardinals, that’s not necessarily a good thing.
On Tuesday night, during the fifth inning of the Card’s 2-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs, the ball did indeed find Piscotty. Again. And again.
In what has to be some kind of ugly record, Piscotty was hit on three separate occasions due to a combination of wild pitching, wild throwing, and awful timing. The outfielder initially reached first base after taking a pitch to the elbow. While sliding into second base just moments later, Piscotty was hit on the opposite elbow by a throw from the Cubs catcher. And the final, most vicious blow, came as Piscotty rounded third and headed for home, only to be beaned in the noggin sliding into the plate on a throw from Javier Baez.
One inning, one trip ’round the bases….three body shots, all on throws. Poor dude. Couldn’t help but wonder if, while Piscotty was lying face down at home plate after receiving the definitive shot, he was wondering what he did to deserve such punishment.
