More parking will be created in downtown Vernon once several city-owned buildings are torn down.
The former New Delhi Restaurant and the Open Door Learning building in the 2900 block of on 29th Street will be demolished, starting Monday.
The City’s Real Estate Manager, Brett Bandy, says the process could take more than two months, which includes removing hazardous materials.
“It will be 8 to 10 weeks total to get those buildings down. The first couple weeks they’ll be removing any hazardous materials, so any asbestos and things like that,” Bandy tells Kiss FM.
Bandy says the site will be paved and used for paid parking, but the long term goal is to use it to connect 25th Avenue with 27th Street.
“It will really clean up that corner and be a much nicer view from the library. It will really make the library stand out a lot more, so we’re looking forward to it,” adds Bandy.
Bandy estimates the City has owned the Open Learning building for about 20 years, while the restaurant was purchased in 2011.
No road closures are anticipated at this time.
