Talk about dark.
Former Walt Disney Studios chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg admitted recently during a Q&A session in New York City that the ending to Disney’s classic 1990 film ‘Pretty Woman’ was scripted quite differently than the fairy tale finale that we know and love. It didn’t deliver Vivian Ward, the character played Julia Roberts, a very positive outcome.
Katzenberg says that, “As a script, ‘Pretty Woman’ was an R-rated movie about a hooker on Hollywood Boulevard. In the original version – it’s pretty dark – I think she died of an overdose.”
The film studio wasn’t thrilled with the grim ending – for obvious reasons. (It is DISNEY, after all) And…the rest is history. The story was rewritten into a romantic comedy, and ‘Pretty Woman’ turned out to be a huge success, making Roberts a superstar in the process.
