The “overcoming adversity” story is something every human can identify with in some capacity. So when a great underdog story pops up, we are drawn into it, and often feel compelled to share it.
That’s exactly what’s happening here. Octopus vs Crab in the epic battle for “Who’s not going to make it home for supper tonight?” The crab, while displaying some nifty evasive maneuvers, is clearly only prolonging the inevitable. The octopus has the upper tentacle.
That is until the crab calls in the heavy artillery – an unexpected twist that sees the underdog emerge victorious – and the crab dances off happily to do crab things late into the evening … probably.
Apparently Harbour Seals like to follow dive teams around – either they like the companionship, or they’re smart enough to know that “divers always find the food.” The divers who caught this footage, Connor Gallagher and Patrick Webster, were on a night shoot off the coast of Monterey, California. It’s not the first time “Whiskers” the seal has accompanied them either – Gallagher says they use the lights “to find things to photograph or film, and he uses the illumination to see fish that cannot see him. We’ll see him start to stalk an individual slowly and all of the sudden the chase is on.”
In this case, Gallagher says “blood and ink went everywhere.”
That makes for one happy crab.
