I found out yesterday that Stuart McLean had passed away. Like a lot of Canadians, I didn’t know him personally, but it still felt like someone I knew had left me.
Everyone in my family knows the story of ‘Dave cooks the turkey’ practically off by heart. And we regularly tell stories that end with “that sounds like something from the Vinyl Cafe.”
Even in journalism school, one of our lessons included a video of Mclean at a fair somewhere in rural Canada, interviewing seemingly unintersting people and getting a great story out of them.
That’s what he was, a great story teller.
A statement from Susan Marjetti, the executive director of radio and audio for CBC English Services:
“Every week for 22 years, Stuart connected with his listeners in a way that few before him have. His Dave and Morley stories were as entertaining as they were enlightening; they made us pause, reflect, but most of all laugh along together.”
You will be missed Mr. McLean.
